The gallbadder is a small sac located underneath the liver. The function is to store bile which is ultimately used to help break down certain types of food contents. The two most common diseases relate to presence of gallstones or problems with the muscle of the gallbadder wall.

This is a condition where the gallbadder has one or multiple stones and from time to time, one or more of these stones will get lodged at the duct that drains the gallbadder. This can cause moderate to severe pain. The treatment is removal of the gallbladder.
This is a more severe condition in which the gallbadder is inflammed and infected. These patients usually present to their local emergency department. It requires more urgent gallbladder removal. This most common reason for this condition is gallstones which is why it is encouraged to remove the gallbladder before inflammation or infection occurs.
